Must-try Products

We all have our go-to products that travel with us, always are at our fingertips on the vanity, or that we recommend to friends without hesitating. Here are a few to keep in mind:

1. Neutrogena On the Spot acne treatment. This little tube is a lifesaver, especially for the blemish prone of us. At the first sign of a bump or blemish, dab on a dot, massage in completely, and go. It usually will eliminate the pimple in two to three applications. So if you see the zit Friday morning, it can be gone by Friday night. Amazing!

2. Revlon Blowdryer/Round brush Combo. I love this hair styling tool. It’s a handheld blow dryer with 2 different sized round brush attachments. It eliminates multiple steps in the hairstyling process by allowing you to dry and smooth or dry and curl at the same time with one hand. Whether you prefer smooth locks or big sexy curls, this is a must for everyday styling.

3. 5-Minute White teeth whitening system. This is an incredibly inexpensive and simple to use product. For less than $5 at most drug stores, you get the gel, tray, and pre-rinse. Add a little of the gel to the flexible rubber tray, insert it and go about the rest of your morning beauty routine. By the time your hair or make-up is done, your teeth are brighter and whiter than before.

Beautiful Body Skin

Many of us spend a lot of time and money making sure that the skin on our faces is protected, clear, and beautiful. But what about the rest of your skin? Your skin is the largest organ you have and all of it deserves to be treated with great care. This is especially true in the summer when we are showing more skin than any other time of year. In order to keep yourself beautiful from head to toe, start by using an exfoliating sponge, loofah, or bath puff for your daily cleansing.

There are also some great exfoliating body washes on the market at very reasonable prices. Try the Suave exfoliating body wash with shea butter for deliciously smooth skin. Once you have removed the dead and dulling skin cells, be sure to moisturize after the bath or shower. There are several “healthy glow” type lines available now that provide quality moisture plus an added tint of color to the skin. Just make sure to apply these products evenly and air dry for a bit before dressing.

The Pits!

It’s summertime and the tank tops are being worn in all their sexy shapes and sizes. I love it! But I don’t love seeing a nasty arm pit on me or anyone else. Ladies, in addition to smelling lovely, those little pits should look as good as the rest of you. Make sure to keep the skin smooth. Arm pit hair grows in several directions, so be sure to shave in every possible direction in order to keep the area smooth.

For many, the skin under the arms can become dry and flaky due to a fungal or bacterial growth. If you find yourself with this condition, an over-the-counter anti-fungal cream applied daily to clean skin both in the morning and at night can remedy the situation.

f you are a sun-kissed goddess, PLEASE be sure to rest your hands on top of your head from time to time while soaking up rays to avoid that blinding white underarm area. Skin tone should be even from head to toe with the possible exception of a tan-line or two but only if from clothing. Finally, choose an antiperspirant/deodorant that doesn’t leave a white residue. Some products, like Dove’s radiance line, even offer nutrients to help improve skin while offering protection. So raise a toast to summertime and look good doing it!

Bikini Wax 101

Bikini wax beauty tipsWhen it comes to ripping the hair out of your body, leave it to the professionals.  Although there are several decent products on the market that will allow you to “do it yourself,” waxing is something best done by the trained professionals. Some of us feel a little awkward about the experience, especially on the first visit to the spa, but the trip is well worth it. Please understand that the person providing this service is actually a trained professional and knows what he or she is doing. Be sure to ask questions and understand what you are asking for and what you are going to get.

There are different styles of waxing from eyebrows to legs to bikini to Brazilian. The most common are the Bikini wax and the Brazilian wax. You have choices when going in for either one, so be sure to discuss options and preferences with your waxer. In most spas, a Bikini wax removes the hair that would be visible if you were wearing a bikini. A Brazilian on the other hand comes in a few different styles. Most commonly, a waxing of this type will remove all of the hair from the small of your back to your belly button. No matter how much hair you would like removed or where, be sure to make your desires clear and allow your professional waxer to do his or her job.

Eye Primer – What the heck is it?

Eye Primer #makeup #beautyEye primer (also eye brightener) can be used to lighten dark circles under and around your eyes, and also on your eyelids to better prime the skin surface for your eyeshadow color. It will make your eyeshadow color last much longer without clumping into the crease of your eye.  Eye primer will also protect your tender eye skin from sun damage which can cause even more darkening that you want to avoid.

I have been testing this product recently: Revlon Photoready Eye Primer & Brightener.  The product it self seems to do the trick, but for correcting dark circles, I prefer a spongy applicator rather than the brush type applicator this one provides.  However, if you are using it just for a primer on your lids, this applicator is perfect and does a wonderful job. For brightening you will need to dab carefully with your third or fourth fingertip being careful not to smear or you’ll have to start all over.   So go ahead, give your bright eyes a chance with this one.

Mermaid Nails

Mermaid Nails #makeup #beauty #nailart #nails

Here is some more beautiful nail art created by my 13-year-old beauty assistant! She did these nails herself.

She started with a clear base coat , then two layers of blue glitter nailpolish.   Using a dotting tool (you can make one with a straight pin stuck into a pencil eraser), create small dots near the base of the nail in light blue, yellow, white and pink.   Cover it all with a clear top coat and you’ll have a magical nail design that will make you ready to swim with mermaids!

What every girl needs – a pink mustache for every day of the week!

What every girl needs - a pink mustache for every day of the week! "#beautytips #girls #mustacheYou have to admit this is kind of funny.  What’s even funnier is that my friends and I actually all wore these one day.  They were quite comfortable to wear.  My favorite was the “Manly Missus” mustache.   Luckily my friends have a good sense of humor and our fuzzy pink “mustaches for girls“  were a hit!  ;-)

Not exactly a “beauty” item, but they did get us a lot of attention.  Sometimes you just have to be funny if you want to stand out in a crowd.

Erase Dark Eye Circles

Erase Dark Eye Circles #beauty #makeupMy readers often ask me how to get rid of dark eye circles.  This is often the one thing that ages your appearance the most – more than wrinkles or gray hair!

There are many causes of dark eye circles, which often begin to appear with adulthood.  Fatigue is not always the cause. Often it is just shadows caused by puffy tissue around  your eyes. Try cold compresses, or sleeping with an extra pillow to reduce puffiness.

It could be hereditary – often dark eye circles run in families, or it could be caused by sun exposure. Always wear your sunscreen! Sunglasses with UV protection when you are spending  a lot of time out doors helps too.

Unfortunately, thinning skin around your eyes as you age is most often the cause. The thin skin is somewhat transparent and shows capillaries through it, giving it a darker bluish hue.  In this case, your only help is to hide them with cosmetics and camouflage! You will want to use a concealer (not a foundation) that has a peach tint, not white or gray.  Dab onto the area, don’t rub it on or smear it.

I have had good results with Maybelline Instant Age Rewind, which also contains sunscreen to protect further.  I prefer the “lightener” instead of the “brightener”, but it depends on how dark your circles are as to which color you want to get. The applicator is what does it for me. It’s a big spongy thing that minimizes having to use my finger pads for dabbing and covers a large area.

One more thing that may help is vitamin supplements or eye creams containing Brazilian suma which have had good results for naturally reducing dark circles.

A Smile to Stop Traffic

Without a doubt, my biggest beauty asset is my smile (or so I’ve been told).  So I do everything I can to keep my pearlies shining, and my lips soft.  That includes using teeth whiteners — Yes, I admit it! I love my teeth white!

The latest thing to hit the market is the the Tanda Pearl which uses light therapy to whiten your teeth called an Ionic Teeth Whitening System.  It does the job without that dreaded sensitivity  that the regular bleaches often give.  It’s a little pricey, but I’ve actually paid more at the dentist for a similar treatment where they coat your teeth with gel and hold a special light over it.

The kit includes a reusable mouth tray device, the gel tubes and a storage case.  It’s being really well received and has even been on Dr. Oz.  One reviewer wrote, “I am very happy I gave this a try! the tray is so easy to use and extremely fast – 5 minutes treatment – goodbye 14 days of 30 minute strip treatments! I am very impressed with how great my teeth looks and was really quite amazed how I got absolutely no sensitivity. I am a FAN and would highly recommend trying it. “

I would love to hear from anyone else who has used this awesome product and given your self a smile so hot that it’s super nova!

Wax on – Wax Off (How to wax!)

Waxing is a great way to remove unwanted hair from anywhere on your body, but let’s face it, the idea of ripping hair out isn’t appealing to anyone. To make waxing easier and less painful, try starting with quality products, including some type of topical numbing agent. Waxing kits come in all shapes, sizes, and styles.

Some brands to consider are Nair wax kit (it’s not like it used to be), Surgi, GiGi, and Satin Smooth. When buying a kit, it will normally come with the wax, applicators, waxing strips, a numbing agent (a spray, wipe, or lotion) and an after-wax skin soother (aloe-based products will also reduce redness). Before you wax, make sure hair is at least ¼” long but not longer than about ½”. If hair is too long, trim first. Be sure to clean the area with the pre-was cleanser provided which usually contains the numbing agent, then use a very small amount of powder to dust the area using a cotton ball or cotton swab depending on the area you are waxing. Apply the wax in the same direction that the hair is growing.

Try to keep the application even…not too thin, not too thick. Cover the waxed area with the strip and rub in even strokes in the direction the hair is growing several times. Be sure to leave a little of the strip at the end to hold onto when removing the strip. Now grab the end of the strip, gently hold the skin taught, and quickly, in one pull, remove the strip in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Avoid the urge to pull up and keep the pulling hand as close to the skin as possible. Pressing a wax free hand or finger on the newly waxed area will help to alleviate some of the pain. Tweeze any leftover hairs; DO NOT rewax the same area. Use the wax remover from the kit to get rid of any leftover wax or residue once you are done waxing and finish with a skin soother. If you run out of wax remover, baby oil will also work. When you have finished, use an aloe-based lotion or the after-wax serum in your kit to soothe skin and remove redness.
