Fun & Fabulous Katy Perry Makeup and Hair

Want to mix up your look like Katy Perry does? Try adding some bold colors to your hair while brightening up your makeup. Katy’s makeup is rarely overdone but is always pin-up girl perfect.

Using several coats of eyeliner and mascara will create standout eyes. Try pulling up liner at the corners for a semi-cat look or adding a shimmering shadow in neutral colors to the lower lid. Lips should be lined, filled in and topped with a gloss no matter what color you choose.

Katy is never afraid to be bold with lip color, so try some rich plums, show-stopping reds, and very Barbie pinks. To add some color and fun to hair without a long-term commitment, play around with clip-in hair extensions in bright colors like teal and sunset orange. Other non-permanent coloring options include Kevin Murphy?s Color Bug for a temporary rub-in or gel colors by companies like Manic Panic.

Be sure to do a strand test of any rubs, gels or temporary dies to be sure the product will eventually come out and not have to be stripped from the hair. Play around and have fun with a more vivacious look!

Career Makeover

I am currently undergoing a makeover for my career.  I do actually have a day job in addition to being a beauty blogger, and certain circumstances have caused me to take a look at the choices I’ve made, and if I want to make changes in the future.  I have considered going back to an old career, but since I am into beauty, I have also wondered about beauty school and starting something completely new.

When I was in high school, our theater club did a production of Grease.  One of my favorite scenes was the number with the beauty school girl and all the models wearing big curlers in their hair while Frankie Valli sang “Beauty School Dropout”.  Do I dare imagine myself going down the professional route? I do have to say that I love the time I spend with my stylist, but I am still trying to picture myself in the profession. I have spent years cutting my friends hair, and my kids, but do I want to do that all day?

A quick look online to research beauty schools such as beauty schools in Overland Park lets me see that there are several tracks one can take in this career such as  Cosmetology, Esthetics (Skin Care), or Specialty Workshops (Makeup Artistry).  Time will tell how my career choices will pan out, but I’ll still have my professional beauty blogger status to keep going!

The New Cat Eyes

With so many new products to choose from, creating dramatic eyes like the classic Cat Eyes is easier than ever and more fun.  Celebrity Emma Stone looks beautiful here with her cat eye liner look.  The  current cateye look is dramatic so play around with the look and the products to create show-stopping eyes of your own.

For the traditional cat eye, place the liner at the inner corner of the eye and start tracing the lash line with a slight upward angle. Keep going just past the outer corner of the eye. Go back and fill in the space between the liner and the lashes on the inner third to half of your eye depending on the drama you want to create. A stiffer brush with a liquid liner will work best for this look.

For a heavier look, use a thick brush like CoverGirl’s Line Exact Liquid liner. Starting at the inner corner of the eye, cover the entire lower lid and finish with an upsweep starting at the outer corner and ending at the outer edge of the eyebrow. Only line the center third of the bottom lash line with a very fine line.

These looks do not require any blending but can be enhanced with shimmery shadows and mascara. Be sure to apply the mascara more heavily at the out corners of the lashes.

Girls Night Out Makeup

Spending quality time with girlfriends is a must for any of us and helps to recharge in a way not other friends can. Whether Girls Night is dinner and a movie, dancing, or just a few drinks to catch up, it’s a chance to play around with makeup and get some honest feedback.

Go out a little bolder with some deeper colors and a few extra coats to make eyes and lips really stand out. Sweep a shimmering pink or taupe over the entire eye lid area and then create some drama with a thick, sideways V that goes along the bottom of the lid and just above the crease in rich colors like plum, emerald, and burgundy. Line eyes with a couple coats of black liner and mascara on both the top and bottom.

For the lips, line and fill in with a nude lip liner then top if off with a coat of dark lipstick like plum, red, or a rich brown. Dust lips with face powder then add another coat of lipstick. This will make color appear richer and keep your lips in place for all of the chatting we girls can do.

Experiment and have fun and then listen to the honest feedback only the best of girlfriends can give you!

Look Like a Celebrity

If you would like to have that youthful glow like Taylor Swift or Hayden Panettierre, you can!

Start by staying well-hydrated. That seems to be the number one celebrity tip or trick. Next, keep skin care natural by using plant based products that help keep skin healthy.

As for the makeup:  Apply cream blush to the apples of the cheeks and then dust the entire face with a bronzer. A sheer, dewy foundation will also give a glistening glow when topped with a bronzer. Keep eyebrows neat and plucked to perfection. This creates a well-groomed and styled look. It’s easier to leave this to the professionals and just go have your brows done.

For the eyes, heat an eyelash curler under hot water, pat dry and curl lashes before applying multiple coats of mascara or even false lashes. This gives the appearance of volume and opens up the eyes. When it comes to the lips, use one of two methods. Option one applies bright lipstick just to the inner parts of the lips and blends it out with a clear balm. Option two applies a darker shade of lipstick all over then tops it off with a lighter or shimmering gloss on the inner parts of lips.

If you can pull it all together, and wear a confident smile as your best accessory, then you are ready for the red carpet!

Eye Makeup for Super-Heroines

see the larger image below

There is no doubt that Halloween is a time to go all out on your makeup!  No need to be shy or conservative. You are going for the ultra dramatic effects, so don’t try to downplay it at all. You are all in if you want to look your best for this special night.  Check out the examples in the photo below.

If you are going to as a super heroine, then you want to take a look at the comic book version of your heroine before you put on your makeup.  Dark sharp lines usually help play it up, along with very dramatic colors and ultra-dramatic accents.  Feel free to darken your eyebrows and draw your bright shadow colors from your lids all the way out your brows.

This is also a great time to experiment with false eyelashes to really make your super hero’s peepers explode off your face.  Liquid eyeliner  or a dark eyeliner pencil can really help draw in some of the details.

Some heroines have small masks as part of their costume. It might be a good idea to paint a mask onto your face, rather than wear an actual mask. It will have the dramatic look you want and be much more comfortable than maneuvering a mask over your other makeup.

If you’re looking for a good time to debut a new piece of body jewelry, this is also a perfect opportunity.  Being in character often gives you courage to try something new for your look, and introduce it into your beauty regimen. Whatever you do, this is no time to be shy.

Be a superstar with your makeup and your whole look. The details make all the difference.

Zombie Makeup Tips

It’s not all about blood. Sometimes it’s about bruises.   Here are some tips to make your Halloween zombie makeup look really scary!

I like to save all the makeup I don’t like anymore in a special container that I use just for Halloween or costuming. It is usually much better quality makeup than the costume stuff you can purchase at Halloween stores, and it doesn’t cost you anything because you already own it! It’s a great way to re-purpose old makeup that you  otherwise never use.

To be the best looking zombie you can be, here are some tips:

  • Don’t over-whiten your face.  You want to look pale, but not like you’re wearing a mask. Blend it well down your neck and any other areas where your skin is showing. Be sure to blend it up into your hairline as well if you want to look realistic. And don’t forget your ears if they are showing.
  • Use some bright purple or red eyeshadow under your eyes to give a nice sunken bruised look. Most people just go for the black makeup, but trust me, you want a variety of colors.  Best colors for rotting flesh and bruises: black, purple, gray and dark green.
  • Forget mascara. You are trying to look sick and dead, remember? You want your eyes sullen. Don’t bother with eyeliner either. Seriously.
  • Use some fiber material such as Metamucil or oatmeal mixed with a little water for a thick paste to create areas of rotting flesh. Cover it with powder and then enhance with fake blood (corn syrup and food coloring), and with white rice to look like maggots crawling around in your wound.
  • Make areas of grey and purple, and some dark green eyeshadow on your arms, hands and face to highlight bruises.  Use a makeup brush to draw long veins on your arms and neck with purple or greenish tinted eyeshadow.
  • Create only a couple of strategic wounds instead of just dousing yourself in fake blood all over.
  • If you want to look like you came up out of the ground, add some decorative moss to your hair.
  • Get some black tooth wax to really change your appearance. Rub it on your teeth and your own friends won’t even recognize you anymore!  It comes off easily, so you don’t have to worry about it staining your teeth, and it usually costs about a dollar.
  • Hairspray can make your hair hold that hideous tease job you’re going to give it.
  • Most important: Stay in character!  Nothing sets off your zombie look like your behavior does!

Beauty of Accessories

Everyone knows that you can really finish off your look with accessories.  But to really draw attention and give your beauty that extra edge, you need to make your look unique.  A great way to do this is with key fashion pieces that you can wear time after time with many outfits over many years.  Classic pieces to your wardrobe might include anything from a little black dress to a fur coat.

Many companies even sell beautiful fur products online now such as MLfurs in Denver. They combine modern contemporary looks with traditional classic looks.  I adore the accessories they have, especially pieces that you don’t see very often like the beautiful scarfs or ear muffs.  You can even get a handbag! Take the time to find just the right item to complement your hair texture or skin tones.

Celebrities love these looks, and there’s a reason for that – it looks chic!  But they are not the only ones who can wear them. There are affordable fur items out there for everyone, so you can look chic too!   Best part about a beautiful item like this is that they feel so good.  And when you feel good,  you look good!

Expensive Treatments and Spa Services

Beauty treatments and makeup for celebrities may be out of your budget, but it’s still fun to think about what is really out there. With the average cost of spa massages ranging from $85-$140, more people are enjoying these special treatments from time to time.  Day spas and resort spas around the world offer the standard experiences of various massages, body wraps, aromatherapies, and acupressure at fairly reasonable costs.

However, there are some extra-special treatments out there for those who are really looking to indulge.  These treatments range from $500 for a six-hands stone massage in Hawaii to over $5000 for an Evian bath in South Beach that uses rose petals and 1000 bottles of Evian water.

Some of the more popular and luxurious treatments being offered to the rich and famous these days include facials with 24-carat gold dissolved in the mist that is gently massaged until absorbed and massages that use over $1 million dollars worth of diamonds.

If that financial commitment is beyond your wallet, there are some more reasonable alternatives that include beer or wine baths and massages at various breweries and wineries, caviar shampoo treatments, and white chocolate raspberry body wraps.  Whatever your budget, there is an indulgent moment waiting to be enjoyed.

Hair Streaks and Extensions Tips

Brightly colored steaks are all the rage these days.  These are a fun and quirky way to express yourself and the look can often be achieved in a temporary way.  Normally, dark hair has to be bleached first and then colored for the vibrant colors to show.

There are some products on the market now such as Spiker colored gel and various hair sprays that can help you achieve the look without the bleaching.  Obviously, the process and intensity of the color is easier for those with lighter hair, but anyone can achieve the look.  The ‘at-home’ method involves using peroxide or a bleaching kit from the local drug store to strip the color from the hair (unless the hair is already a light blonde).  Any shade of Kool-aid can then be used to dye the hair and create the desired color streak.  There are also dyes at the local beauty supply store that can be used.

For the less adventurous or those who don’t want to make the full commitment, single extensions can be clipped into the hair and come in a rainbow selection of colors.  These extensions can be trimmed to match the hair’s length, but DO NOT use the curling iron on these locks because it isn’t real hair and will melt.  Even with the clipped-in version, the look is fun and cool!
