Smoky and Smoldering

It’s a classic look that we have all tried or want to try at some point. Those smoky, sexy eyes that every celebrity seems to have whether on the red carpet or the big screen can be yours too.

To create this smoldering look at home, start by applying a cream shadow to the entire eye lid and the inner corners of the eye in a light shade like cream, ivory, or pearl. Apply a powder shadow to the lower lid in steel, gray, or pewter. Next, brush on a dark brown shadow to the crease area and go all the way out to the edge of the eye that lines up with the end of your eyebrows. Blend lightly.

For your liner, use a black pencil. Liquid liners will run and don’t create the softness that a pencil can achieve. Line the entire eye including top and bottom lash lines as well as the inner and outer corners. Soften the lower liner with a light dusting of the same color in your crease. Finish the look with several coats of black mascara, being sure to apply the next coat before the first one dries.

If you are really wanting to showcase your new smoky look, keep lips and cheeks light and soft to allow those eyes to take center stage.

Makeup Basics for School

eyelinerAre you brand new to wearing makeup, or do you have a daughter who is about to embark on her makeup journey?  With the start of another school year under out belt, it’s time to arm my girls with the proper tools to put their best faces forward. Deciding when to start wearing makeup is a discussion that many moms have had, but no matter when you and your daughter decide to start wearing makeup, help her by providing quality products and education about good skin care.

A wonderful and fairly new line of products on the market are by Simple. The line claims to be the sensitive skin experts and so far, it’s doing a great job. The line includes cleansing wipes, makeup removers, cleansers, toners, and moisturizers. The products contain pro-vitamin B5 that helps to restore skins nature softness and smoothness. It is definitely a product worth trying, especially for younger skin. Instilling the importance of a healthy beauty routine will help to keep our daughters looking young and beautiful throughout their lives. When it comes to makeup supplies, younger girls (teenagers and tweeners) should keep it simple and light.

Choosing natural colors that enhance their natural beauty is a great idea. Shimmers and sparkles can also be fun and come in some beautiful shades of peach, pink, and taupe. Most girls can start with a few basic products like powder, eye shadow, mascara, and lip gloss. A great option for younger girls ready to experiment with their eye makeup is clear mascara. They can learn how to properly apply the product, add shine to their own eyelashes, and not create that raccoon look with all of the black encircling their eyes. Many of the clear mascaras also come with vitamins and nutrients that help condition lashes.

Lip glosses come is so many different shades and styles now, so this can be an inexpensive way to play with colors and see what you and your daughter like best. No matter what route you take with makeup or when the journey starts, be sure to keep the lines of communication open and have fun together!

Eye Makeup for Super-Heroines

see the larger image below

There is no doubt that Halloween is a time to go all out on your makeup!  No need to be shy or conservative. You are going for the ultra dramatic effects, so don’t try to downplay it at all. You are all in if you want to look your best for this special night.  Check out the examples in the photo below.

If you are going to as a super heroine, then you want to take a look at the comic book version of your heroine before you put on your makeup.  Dark sharp lines usually help play it up, along with very dramatic colors and ultra-dramatic accents.  Feel free to darken your eyebrows and draw your bright shadow colors from your lids all the way out your brows.

This is also a great time to experiment with false eyelashes to really make your super hero’s peepers explode off your face.  Liquid eyeliner  or a dark eyeliner pencil can really help draw in some of the details.

Some heroines have small masks as part of their costume. It might be a good idea to paint a mask onto your face, rather than wear an actual mask. It will have the dramatic look you want and be much more comfortable than maneuvering a mask over your other makeup.

If you’re looking for a good time to debut a new piece of body jewelry, this is also a perfect opportunity.  Being in character often gives you courage to try something new for your look, and introduce it into your beauty regimen. Whatever you do, this is no time to be shy.

Be a superstar with your makeup and your whole look. The details make all the difference.

Eye Shadow Secrets

eye shadow secretsThe key to great eye shadow application is the brushes. Trying to create that look whether it be smoky, sexy, cat eye or natural will be much easier with the proper applicators. Sephora and MAC both have great lines of brushes, but don’t be fooled by the price. Sonia Kashuk has a nice line of brushes available at Target at a very reasonable price. You don?t need to have dozens of brushes to put on eye shadow, but a small brush, a sponge-tip applicator, and a blending brush are must-haves to create a great look. Once you have the tools of the trade at hand, start creating a fabulous look for yourself.

To brighten and widen the look of your eyes, highlight the inner corner of the eye with a light shimmery shadow in white, peach, or silver. This also makes you appear more alert than you might be some days. You can also use this same color against the brow line to help create a lively and wide-eyed look. When applying color to the rest of the lid, use your sponge-tip applicator to apply the darkest color to the lower part of the lid and into the crease. Using a complimentary color and your brush, apply the next shadow to the remaining lid, but don?t go too high and cover up your light shadow.

Finally, blend using your blending brush and small, light circles. This basic application technique will give you a flawless look and have you ready for whatever the day may bring!

Shimmery Diamond Makeup tips

Compliment your smile by making your eyes sparkle like diamonds.  Glitter makeup products around your eyes for special occasions can make the occasion even more special.  Glitter or sparkling appliques are actually quite easy to apply. In fact, you really can’t go wrong, because the whole look is kind of over the top anyway.

Make sure your skin is moisturized before you begin. Apply all of your foundation and concealer that is needed.  Then it’s time to start on the eyes.

Begin with a dramatic eyeliner and then go for bright eyeshadow colors on your lid.  Don’t apply your mascara just yet, otherwise you will have it stuck all in your eyelashes.   Now you are ready for the glitter.  Apply it to the brow area and along your temple and cheeks if you are really going all out.  Be sure to add just a touch under your lower lash about two thirds of the way out, but not in the inner corner of your eye since that will make you appear too crosseyed.

If you are applying rhinestones to your skin, do not use your fingers. Use a swab or a q-tip for a more precise application.  Rhinestones often look good under the eye along the cheekbone. You can even do one eye for a more dramatic effect.  Once you have applied your glitter, you are now ready for a thick dramatic coat of mascara.  Make sure your lips are super glossy and shiny as well.

Finally, compliment the entire look with some  synthetic diamond rings to complete your entire outfit like these moissanites.  These are so beautiful, and will look great on you! Nothing glitters like diamonds!

Eye Primer – What the heck is it?

Eye Primer #makeup #beautyEye primer (also eye brightener) can be used to lighten dark circles under and around your eyes, and also on your eyelids to better prime the skin surface for your eyeshadow color. It will make your eyeshadow color last much longer without clumping into the crease of your eye.  Eye primer will also protect your tender eye skin from sun damage which can cause even more darkening that you want to avoid.

I have been testing this product recently: Revlon Photoready Eye Primer & Brightener.  The product it self seems to do the trick, but for correcting dark circles, I prefer a spongy applicator rather than the brush type applicator this one provides.  However, if you are using it just for a primer on your lids, this applicator is perfect and does a wonderful job. For brightening you will need to dab carefully with your third or fourth fingertip being careful not to smear or you’ll have to start all over.   So go ahead, give your bright eyes a chance with this one.

Erase Dark Eye Circles

Erase Dark Eye Circles #beauty #makeupMy readers often ask me how to get rid of dark eye circles.  This is often the one thing that ages your appearance the most – more than wrinkles or gray hair!

There are many causes of dark eye circles, which often begin to appear with adulthood.  Fatigue is not always the cause. Often it is just shadows caused by puffy tissue around  your eyes. Try cold compresses, or sleeping with an extra pillow to reduce puffiness.

It could be hereditary – often dark eye circles run in families, or it could be caused by sun exposure. Always wear your sunscreen! Sunglasses with UV protection when you are spending  a lot of time out doors helps too.

Unfortunately, thinning skin around your eyes as you age is most often the cause. The thin skin is somewhat transparent and shows capillaries through it, giving it a darker bluish hue.  In this case, your only help is to hide them with cosmetics and camouflage! You will want to use a concealer (not a foundation) that has a peach tint, not white or gray.  Dab onto the area, don’t rub it on or smear it.

I have had good results with Maybelline Instant Age Rewind, which also contains sunscreen to protect further.  I prefer the “lightener” instead of the “brightener”, but it depends on how dark your circles are as to which color you want to get. The applicator is what does it for me. It’s a big spongy thing that minimizes having to use my finger pads for dabbing and covers a large area.

One more thing that may help is vitamin supplements or eye creams containing Brazilian suma which have had good results for naturally reducing dark circles.

Eyebrows – Easy Does It!

Keeping your eyebrows neat is an essential part of a well-put-together look. Finding the right shape and technique to do this can be difficult…and painful. Start by choosing the shape that will best suit your features.

If you have a square or heart-shaped face, go with a soft, round eyebrow. Create some angled brows to minimize the roundness of your face. To widen a longer or thinner face, use a horizontal brow. Once you know the look you’re going to create, the next question is how. There are several options including tweezing, waxing, and threading.

Regardless of the method you choose, start with quality tools, get your hair out of your face so you have a clear view of the working area, and then cleanse the face with warm water to help relax those follicles. Using a stencil and a white pencil will help you to keep focused on the desired shape and guide you in the process of removing the unwanted hairs. Start the removal process at the arches and work your way out. When you think the majority of the work has been done, step away from the mirror and access the situation.

Then take a minute or two to go back and fine tune the look. After you have achieved your new look, apply some aloe or after-wax lotion to help soothe the skin and reduce any redness. Always remember though… Don’t go overboard or you’ll be stenciling back on some new eyebrows!

Shape up Eyes

To make the most of your eye shape, pay attention to the colors you choose and the application method you rely on. Try some of these tips to get the most out of your shape:

For Asian Eyes – Use black or black/brown eye liner to create a thick line along the top lashes. Blend gently for a smoky look and then apply a thinner line under the bottom lashes.

For Wide Eyes – Apply deeper shadows to the inner half of the lid and a lighter shades on the outer half. Then blend for a subtle transition between colors.

For Close Eyes – Go the opposite of the Wide Eye folks and apply the lighter shades to the inner half of the lid and the darker shades to the outer half. Always remember to blend!

For the Four-Eyed – Use a black, perhaps shimmering, mascara to really play up your eyes and bring them out from behind the glasses. Be sure to use an eyelash curler and two coats of mascara. Allow a few seconds for the mascara to dry completely before putting the glasses back on.

No matter what your eye shape, remember to play up the color as much as possible and use proper application techniques to make the most of your eyes.

Eye Extravaganza

Here are a few do’s and don’ts for making the most out of those peepers. Whenever applying eye shadow, start with a foundation to help keep it in place. You won’t need expensive primers for this, just the regular concealer that you dot on those dark circles can also be dotted above your eye to create a stay-put canvas for color. Once color is applied, BLEND!! Don’t be afraid to blend a little longer than you think is necessary.

Color-blocked eye shadow is not a good look on anyone. Keep colors light at the top and darker on the lid. A touch of white eye shadow (using an eye shadow pencil makes this much easier and keeps the color off the bridge of your nose) will make eyes look brighter and wider. For those of us who are more experienced and may have a few lines that show it, shimmering shadows will highlight those life lines, so be careful. Not all of us care about hiding our wisdom though, so go ahead and give a gold shimmer a try.

Select eye colors that enhance your eye color, but remember that colors like taupe and light lavender can really be worn by the majority. For a more specific to you look, check out a color wheel and choose an eye shadow that falls opposite of your eye color, like purple for green, or gold for blue.  Remember to always have fun with your eye color and mix it up a bit from time to time.
