Bangs or No Bangs?

Long, short, layered around your face, choppy, straight.. the choices go on and on endlessly for bangs! Even harder than picking the type you want though, is deciding if you want them at all. Bangs can look incredible, but they aren’t for everyone. So, to help you decide, let’s take a look at the pros and cons!

The great thing about bangs is that they’re a feature that will let you mask areas you aren’t so fond of. If you are self-conscious about your forehead, all you need to do is have your hairdresser do them nice and long to cover it. You can even hide one entire side of your face with them! They also tend to make you look years younger instantly. No matter what you worry about, there is probably a fringe related fix that you can try.

On the other hand, bangs can be hard to maintain. They grow quickly and require a lot of hair trims, and one small mishap at the salon can make them look awful! If they are half an inch too short, you might be unhappy for weeks, which can seem like an eternity. They will get into your eyes no matter how much you try to avoid it, and a lot of people can’t handle that. Sometimes it is simply that they make a person look too young. Where there are many wonderful things, for some, the problems can be endless.

Before you head to your hairdresser and ask for a new fringe, just remember to think it through. Can you handle the cons? The hair in your eyes and frequent trimming? If you think you can handle it, go for it!

Oily Hair Fix

We all know that washing your hair every day is bad for it, but what should we be doing when the day after you wash it your roots look oily and unappealing? Moments like that make us want to head to the shower. Try to resist this urge! Instead, you can break out the baby powder.

Take a small amount in your hand and pat it onto your roots. Now take out a comb and comb it through. The oils will help the powder blend into your hair, and the powder will gradually become invisible. This is much less stressing on your hair, but it won’t last forever. Sadly, there is no amazing miracle cure for second day oily hair! Still, the powder can work small miracles for a tight schedule.

Just remember to not fall back on this every time! Natural oils are healthy for your hair, so taking them away can actually damage your beautiful locks. In fact, naturally oily hair does not always look bad! It looks, well, normal! So if you can skip the powder, go for it.

Beauty Tips for Minimizing Problem Areas

For both women and men, minimizing problem areas is something that happens every day whether we realize it or not. By wearing certain clothes, we hide aspects of ourselves that we don’t like, for example. A shirt with longer sleeves might hide arms that we feel are too large, or a larger shirt might hide a pudgy stomach. These are things that we can, of course, become comfortable with, but sometimes it’s simply easier to make ourselves feel better by hiding them temporarily from the rest of the world.

Did you know that this can be done with our hair though? If your forehead makes you feel uncomfortable, longer bangs that go down to about your eyebrows may give you a boost of confidence. If you feel like you have too much weight under your chin, long layers may help distract from it. For every problem you have with your face, there is a hairstyle that can help raise your self confidence back up! It just takes a bit of searching.

To figure out what works for you, look into a mirror and think about what you would prefer was hidden. If you have a hairstyle book handy, or access to the internet, you can look through various styles and see what seems to hide that aspect. If you don’t the next time you go into a salon, be very specific. Tell your hairdresser that you want to hide your problem area, and ask them what they suggest. It’s actually very easy, and I know you will be pleased with the results.

Sometimes we all need that extra boost in our confidence levels.

Home Hair Coloring

Salons can be very expensive, and sometimes the price is just out of the question. Instead, people turn to color that they can apply to their hair at home. It can be scary at first, going into a store and not knowing where to start. There are so many shades of each basic color! To keep the overwhelming feeling to a minimum, try not to rush yourself. Spend a good amount of time picking out a shade you like, and then compare it to similar versions by other brands. Keep in mind that just because a product is more expensive, that does not necessarily mean it will be better.

When you pick out your color and take it home, don’t be afraid of it! With a few small tips, you will become an expert on doing your hair at home.

What I suggest, is to either have a friend help you apply the color, or to use a lot of bobby pins to pin up sections that you have finished with. Don’t be afraid to put too much color on, only worry about not having enough! As for the gloves the package comes with.. throw them away! They are usually very thin and break easily, allowing the color to stain your fingers. You can pick up a cheap pack of rubber gloves from a store that will work much better.

After the color has been applied, use a hair clip to keep it off of your neck. After you let it sit for the correct amount of time, all you need to do is wash it out and add conditioner. See? It’s not that scary! I bet you became an expert before you even finished reading this!

I like to use home hair coloring as an “extender” to my professional hair color from my stylist. Sometimes those roots just start showing way too soon before I’m ready to come in to the salon, so I do a touch up at home to make it last a few more weeks.

Everyday Hairstyles Tips

Everyone always talks about date hairstyles, wedding hairstyles and other fancy way to do your hair, but what about when you just want to go out and get a cup of coffee or run errands? Sometimes the easiest thing to do is to just throw your hair up into a bun or ponytail, and… surprise! That isn’t such a bad idea.

A messy bun or rough ponytail can actually look incredible, if done right. That sounds silly, but you can mess up a messy style!

For the bun, what you should do is comb back your hair and pull your hair up into a bun as you normally would. Now take a few strands of hair down on either side of your face to frame your features, then a few strands down from the bun as well. They should hang around it cutely, not “I just got out of bed and didn’t brush my hair.”-like. Take a few bobby pins and pin the bun to your hair gently. That’s it!

As for the ponytail, you are going to need a small Bumpit, which you can find in discount stores. Place it on top of your head, and then pull your hair up over it and into a loose ponytail. Now guess what! That’s all you have to do! The Bumpit should add a poof to your hair on top that is glamorous and pretty, but not over the top for a day out gathering groceries.

We always want to look our best, and now you can do it while doing boring every day chores. Have fun!

Wavy Hair Tips

Celebrities always seem to know what to do with their hair and how to have perfect styles with no effort. One style in particular that is very popular is when they turn their straight hair into miraculously not tangled waves. Curls can be tough for an everyday look, but wavy can sometimes be even harder to perfect without a stylist. An at home attempt can easily end up frizzy and out of control.

Before you start, you should make sure that your hair is clean and well conditioned. While drying, work in a bit of volumizing product, which you can find in just about any store that sells hair related items. Any brand or type works! Now take out your blow dryer to activate what you just put in. Start at your roots and work your way down.

On to the curling! You’ll want to use a wide-barrel curling iron, and keep in mind to not hold it in your hair longer than ten seconds, or you’ll end up with tighter curls. For wavy hair, we don’t want really tight curls! When you finish each one, either hold it in your palm until it cools or pin it up on your head with bobby pins. Work your way through your hair this way, doing it in small one inch sections until you look quite silly with all of your curls on your head!

The mistake people usually make here is brushing their curls with a comb.. don’t do this! Just work your fingers gently through them to get the desired curl, then spray a bit of hairspray on. Wavy hair has never been so simple!

Damaged Hair Beauty Tips

Stray hairs, split ends, unbearable dryness.. all the symptoms of damaged hair! It happens quickly and gets worse just as fast. Most women let it go and simply wet down the flyaway hairs or put product into it to keep the frizz from taking over. Some look at their split ends and think that it’s okay, because they don’t seem to be doing anything. Wrong! Damage can really take a toll on your hair, and there are some easy ways to fix it.

The most well known tip is simply snipping away the split ends. This not only gets rid of them, but keeps your hair growing at a nice pace. You should do this at least once every two months (but once a month is better!), either at a salon, or even at home. Just trim the tips off, no need to get rid of length.

Another good tip is to only shampoo and condition your hair two or three times a week. I know that it can be hard if your hair gets oily very fast, but in the long run, it will help you keep the damage to a minimum!

Now, for a less conventional tip.. a homemade deep conditioning product. This can be made out of various things, such as suntan oil, mayo or even egg. A great recipe is one cup of mayo and ½ of an avocado. Whip up your concoction and apply it to your hair, then leave it on for ten to twenty minutes before rinsing it out. A hot towel wrapped around your head will help too!

In the end, if the damage is too bad, you may be forced to lose a bit of your length. This is an option most people really hate to take, so taking good care of your hair is the best thing you can do from the very start.

Vivid Hair Colors

Dying your hair colors such as bright red or even something that stands out a bit more, like pink or blue, can end with you wanting to just scream! Why is that? Because the color seems to fade so fast! Not only do those with vivid shades have to fix their roots, but they sometimes need a touch-up of color to fix the awful fading.

Sadly, there isn’t too much that can be done about this problem. Your best defense is to avoid shampooing daily. When you shampoo your hair each and every day, it not only strips it of essential oils, but it also pulls those bits of color out and down the drain super fast! Now, when you do shampoo, remember to stick to a special color treated type. Same goes for conditioner!

Also, if you’re a big fan of the sun, these colors are not for you. Heading out into the bright sunlight will make them fade like nothing else.

Don’t be afraid to rock those bright colors any longer! Remember, if it gets too faded, all you have to do is have another day of pampering yourself at the salon.

Getting the Haircut You Want

When you head into a salon, sometimes the choices can be overwhelming. Books everywhere, filled with every cut and color imaginable, mixed with products and helpful stylists.  It is really easy to become lost in it all and unsure of what you want, and in the end, even easier to walk out with an unsatisfactory style.

Before even setting foot in the salon of your choice, you should look through books, magazines or even the Internet to find a few styles you like. Picking out just one can be hard, as not every style will work for every person.  If you find two or three that could possibly be mixed together, or even ones that you like separately, you have a good chance of liking what you end up with.

Now, not every stylist will want to work off of a photo!  Keep in mind that it is, no matter how great a celebrity’s hair cut is, hard to replicate something exactly.  Think about the characteristics of what you want. Does it have long bangs? Choppy layers? These are the things you want to tell your stylist.  If you want the cut to frame your face,  make sure to tell them that! Sometimes knowing what you want is easier than judging from a photograph.  Also, if you are getting a color change, make sure to say exactly what you want.  If you want it slightly red, but not orange/red, tell them so before they begin.

Finding and getting a new style is so much fun, and a bad haircut can always be avoided!

“Dry” Hair Cut or Razor Cut

It may seem unusual to style your hair before you cut it, but that’s exactly what I have done.

My favorite way to wear my hair is long and straight. It’s naturally a little wavy, but I use a flat iron and straighten it. I like the way it glides over my shoulders and flips around softly when it’s been straightened. The most flattering haircut I get with this style is long straight, but soft layers. I also have long layered bangs (not blunt cut). The blunt cut just doesn’t work for my waves. It ends up looking choppy.

A great hair cut that I often get is what my hair stylist calls a “Dry Cut”. He blows it dry and then straightens it all before he even comes near it with the scissors. He pulls up a section at a time and cuts in a downward sweeping motion toward the floor to give me my soft cut. Occasionally he will even use a razor to get this effect. The razor gives very soft layers and makes all the hair lie with a full but flowing effect.

The dry cut gives attention to the way my hair will really lay once it’s been styled. If you like to wear your hair long and straight, ask your stylist if they have ever done a “dry cut”. You might get an effect you’ll ask for again and again.
