Girls Night Out Makeup

Spending quality time with girlfriends is a must for any of us and helps to recharge in a way not other friends can. Whether Girls Night is dinner and a movie, dancing, or just a few drinks to catch up, it’s a chance to play around with makeup and get some honest feedback.

Go out a little bolder with some deeper colors and a few extra coats to make eyes and lips really stand out. Sweep a shimmering pink or taupe over the entire eye lid area and then create some drama with a thick, sideways V that goes along the bottom of the lid and just above the crease in rich colors like plum, emerald, and burgundy. Line eyes with a couple coats of black liner and mascara on both the top and bottom.

For the lips, line and fill in with a nude lip liner then top if off with a coat of dark lipstick like plum, red, or a rich brown. Dust lips with face powder then add another coat of lipstick. This will make color appear richer and keep your lips in place for all of the chatting we girls can do.

Experiment and have fun and then listen to the honest feedback only the best of girlfriends can give you!

Sheer is Sexy

With all of the overdone, more is better, heavily embellished looks out there, sheer and natural seems almost obsolete. But that’s not really the case. Most guys are attracted to the simple and sheer look because it denotes an amount of low-maintenance that is very appealing.

To keep looking like you didn’t even try to be as beautiful as you really are, stick with soft shades like blush and peach. Since we all don’t have the perfect skin to start with, a little concealer dabbed under the eyes can brighten up your face and hide any imperfections.

Top the whole face with a light dusting of loose mineral powder in a neutral shade. Use a blush or peach on the apples of your cheeks and lower eyelids for a soft, sheer look. To keep the eyes looking wide and bright, apply brown eyeliner by using a series of dots in the lash line on the tops only, and finish with the same shade of brown mascara on top and bottom lashes.

Lips will only need a little gloss in a taupe, pink or peach shade depending on your skin tone. All of these fresh, light colors will create a sheer beauty that makes you feel confident and alive.

Look Like the Girl Next Door

With all of the fresh, young faces hitting the scene these days, who wouldn’t want to look fresh and new like Blake Lively? To help achieve this look keep the colors soft and natural.

Start with a tinted moisturizer containing an SPF of at least 15 and apply a thin layer. Follow that up with a highlighter across the cheeks, nose and forehead. Top the highlighter off with a peach or light pink cream blush and blend well.

To keep eyes fresh and young, use a soft brown pencil to lightly line the bottom lash line only. Blend using a toasted almond eye shadow that you will then apply to the entire lid. Eye shadow can have a soft shimmer, but don?t overdo it.

Curl lashes and apply a single coat of brown or taupe mascara to top and bottom lashes. If your lips are naturally pink, use a clear lip balm with conditioners and sun protection. If your lips are less than pink, choose a balm with a hint of pink. Avoid sticky glosses or heavy lipsticks, even if the color is light. Looking fresh and new can be quick and easy with the right colors and products.  Your girl-next-door look is sweet and fresh!

So Many Eye Liners to Choose From!

free eyeliner makeup sampleWhen choosing an eye liner, there are several options. There is the standard pencil, liquid liners, and gel liners. It depends on your own style and comfort. While liquid liners might provide a more dramatic look, gel liners are typically easier to apply accurately. The eye pencil is also easy to control but may fade or smudge throughout the day. Using a bit of eye shadow can help the staying power of any eye liner. MAC carries several eye liners in liquid, gel, and pencil form that have been rated as some of the best at fairly reasonable prices.

There are also some great options at your local drugstore for a good price such as Maybelline?s Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner and Wet ?n? Wild?s Megaliner. Once you have decided on the type of liner you prefer, experiment with different colors for different occasions. For daytime at work or home, taupe and brown tend to be more natural looking and create definition for the eye without looking overdrawn. At night, black and bold colors like purple and blue create a dramatic effect that really stands out in a crowd. As always, play around with your makeup and see what you like the best!

Lip Liner – its not what it used to be

Many people feel that lip liner is a make-up tool of days gone by, but that is far from true. Lip liner is a very useful tool that more of us should take advantage of.

Now, when I say “lip liner” I’m not talking about a bright red or pink ring of color that surrounds where you want you lips to be in a perfect world. I’m talking about a finishing tool that allows you to define the lip area and keep lip color in place longer. Lip liners can help define lips and keep your lip stick, stain or gloss from feathering out into those fine lines. Trust me, that’s not a good look for anyone.

When lining your lips, be sure that the pencil is sharp but not pointy. Start at the center and draw a smooth line up, following the natural shape of your lips. Go slowly and strive to make one continuous line around the bottom lip and another continuous line across the top sides. When finished, fill in the lips lightly with the pencil, powder, then add your lip color of choice. Using a natural shade of lip liner is much more versatile and can even go it alone with just a little gloss.

Mineral MakeUp

Mineral makeup is not a new phenomenon, but it does seem to be gaining in popularity since it first hit the market in the 1970′s. Although some people have pooh-poohed the mineral makeup craze, it does have some benefits and should be considered by most of us as a great makeup alternative. Mineral makeup seems to be more natural looking on most of us as long as it is applied correctly. Any makeup will looked caked on if it has been.

The most popular application method is the tap, swirl, and buff approach. Dip your brush into the powder, tap off the excess, swirl brush onto skin, and then buff to smooth and remove any excess. For more coverage, try using a flat top brush instead of a round one. For many, mineral makeup wears better than liquid makeup and feels lighter on their skin. Don’t be confused into thinking that mineral makeup is some all natural product.  Along with all other makeup, it contains minerals like zinc oxide which is synthetic and not natural.

Both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (another ingredient in most mineral makeups) block sun physically so mineral makeup does offer some sun protection for days when you’re just running around. Zinc oxide also can help to calm irritated skin because of its anti-inflammatory properties. The key to mineral makeup is actually what it doesn’t contain like oils, dyes, and fragrances. For this reason, it seems to be a better choice for those with sensitive skin and is often recommended by dermatologist.

These missing ingredients mean that is doesn’t normally irritate skin like some cosmetics. Thanks to the boom in popularity of mineral makeup, it now comes in more products than just face powder and foundation. It now also comes in bronzers, blush, eye shadows, and even lipsticks.

Mineral makeup is definitely worth a try the next time you restock your cosmetics drawer.

Makeup Basics for School

eyelinerAre you brand new to wearing makeup, or do you have a daughter who is about to embark on her makeup journey?  With the start of another school year under out belt, it’s time to arm my girls with the proper tools to put their best faces forward. Deciding when to start wearing makeup is a discussion that many moms have had, but no matter when you and your daughter decide to start wearing makeup, help her by providing quality products and education about good skin care.

A wonderful and fairly new line of products on the market are by Simple. The line claims to be the sensitive skin experts and so far, it’s doing a great job. The line includes cleansing wipes, makeup removers, cleansers, toners, and moisturizers. The products contain pro-vitamin B5 that helps to restore skins nature softness and smoothness. It is definitely a product worth trying, especially for younger skin. Instilling the importance of a healthy beauty routine will help to keep our daughters looking young and beautiful throughout their lives. When it comes to makeup supplies, younger girls (teenagers and tweeners) should keep it simple and light.

Choosing natural colors that enhance their natural beauty is a great idea. Shimmers and sparkles can also be fun and come in some beautiful shades of peach, pink, and taupe. Most girls can start with a few basic products like powder, eye shadow, mascara, and lip gloss. A great option for younger girls ready to experiment with their eye makeup is clear mascara. They can learn how to properly apply the product, add shine to their own eyelashes, and not create that raccoon look with all of the black encircling their eyes. Many of the clear mascaras also come with vitamins and nutrients that help condition lashes.

Lip glosses come is so many different shades and styles now, so this can be an inexpensive way to play with colors and see what you and your daughter like best. No matter what route you take with makeup or when the journey starts, be sure to keep the lines of communication open and have fun together!

Eye Makeup for Super-Heroines

see the larger image below

There is no doubt that Halloween is a time to go all out on your makeup!  No need to be shy or conservative. You are going for the ultra dramatic effects, so don’t try to downplay it at all. You are all in if you want to look your best for this special night.  Check out the examples in the photo below.

If you are going to as a super heroine, then you want to take a look at the comic book version of your heroine before you put on your makeup.  Dark sharp lines usually help play it up, along with very dramatic colors and ultra-dramatic accents.  Feel free to darken your eyebrows and draw your bright shadow colors from your lids all the way out your brows.

This is also a great time to experiment with false eyelashes to really make your super hero’s peepers explode off your face.  Liquid eyeliner  or a dark eyeliner pencil can really help draw in some of the details.

Some heroines have small masks as part of their costume. It might be a good idea to paint a mask onto your face, rather than wear an actual mask. It will have the dramatic look you want and be much more comfortable than maneuvering a mask over your other makeup.

If you’re looking for a good time to debut a new piece of body jewelry, this is also a perfect opportunity.  Being in character often gives you courage to try something new for your look, and introduce it into your beauty regimen. Whatever you do, this is no time to be shy.

Be a superstar with your makeup and your whole look. The details make all the difference.

Zombie Makeup Tips

It’s not all about blood. Sometimes it’s about bruises.   Here are some tips to make your Halloween zombie makeup look really scary!

I like to save all the makeup I don’t like anymore in a special container that I use just for Halloween or costuming. It is usually much better quality makeup than the costume stuff you can purchase at Halloween stores, and it doesn’t cost you anything because you already own it! It’s a great way to re-purpose old makeup that you  otherwise never use.

To be the best looking zombie you can be, here are some tips:

  • Don’t over-whiten your face.  You want to look pale, but not like you’re wearing a mask. Blend it well down your neck and any other areas where your skin is showing. Be sure to blend it up into your hairline as well if you want to look realistic. And don’t forget your ears if they are showing.
  • Use some bright purple or red eyeshadow under your eyes to give a nice sunken bruised look. Most people just go for the black makeup, but trust me, you want a variety of colors.  Best colors for rotting flesh and bruises: black, purple, gray and dark green.
  • Forget mascara. You are trying to look sick and dead, remember? You want your eyes sullen. Don’t bother with eyeliner either. Seriously.
  • Use some fiber material such as Metamucil or oatmeal mixed with a little water for a thick paste to create areas of rotting flesh. Cover it with powder and then enhance with fake blood (corn syrup and food coloring), and with white rice to look like maggots crawling around in your wound.
  • Make areas of grey and purple, and some dark green eyeshadow on your arms, hands and face to highlight bruises.  Use a makeup brush to draw long veins on your arms and neck with purple or greenish tinted eyeshadow.
  • Create only a couple of strategic wounds instead of just dousing yourself in fake blood all over.
  • If you want to look like you came up out of the ground, add some decorative moss to your hair.
  • Get some black tooth wax to really change your appearance. Rub it on your teeth and your own friends won’t even recognize you anymore!  It comes off easily, so you don’t have to worry about it staining your teeth, and it usually costs about a dollar.
  • Hairspray can make your hair hold that hideous tease job you’re going to give it.
  • Most important: Stay in character!  Nothing sets off your zombie look like your behavior does!

Shimmery Diamond Makeup tips

Compliment your smile by making your eyes sparkle like diamonds.  Glitter makeup products around your eyes for special occasions can make the occasion even more special.  Glitter or sparkling appliques are actually quite easy to apply. In fact, you really can’t go wrong, because the whole look is kind of over the top anyway.

Make sure your skin is moisturized before you begin. Apply all of your foundation and concealer that is needed.  Then it’s time to start on the eyes.

Begin with a dramatic eyeliner and then go for bright eyeshadow colors on your lid.  Don’t apply your mascara just yet, otherwise you will have it stuck all in your eyelashes.   Now you are ready for the glitter.  Apply it to the brow area and along your temple and cheeks if you are really going all out.  Be sure to add just a touch under your lower lash about two thirds of the way out, but not in the inner corner of your eye since that will make you appear too crosseyed.

If you are applying rhinestones to your skin, do not use your fingers. Use a swab or a q-tip for a more precise application.  Rhinestones often look good under the eye along the cheekbone. You can even do one eye for a more dramatic effect.  Once you have applied your glitter, you are now ready for a thick dramatic coat of mascara.  Make sure your lips are super glossy and shiny as well.

Finally, compliment the entire look with some  synthetic diamond rings to complete your entire outfit like these moissanites.  These are so beautiful, and will look great on you! Nothing glitters like diamonds!
