What every girl needs – a pink mustache for every day of the week!

What every girl needs - a pink mustache for every day of the week! "#beautytips #girls #mustacheYou have to admit this is kind of funny.  What’s even funnier is that my friends and I actually all wore these one day.  They were quite comfortable to wear.  My favorite was the “Manly Missus” mustache.   Luckily my friends have a good sense of humor and our fuzzy pink “mustaches for girls“  were a hit!  ;-)

Not exactly a “beauty” item, but they did get us a lot of attention.  Sometimes you just have to be funny if you want to stand out in a crowd.

Erase Dark Eye Circles

Erase Dark Eye Circles #beauty #makeupMy readers often ask me how to get rid of dark eye circles.  This is often the one thing that ages your appearance the most – more than wrinkles or gray hair!

There are many causes of dark eye circles, which often begin to appear with adulthood.  Fatigue is not always the cause. Often it is just shadows caused by puffy tissue around  your eyes. Try cold compresses, or sleeping with an extra pillow to reduce puffiness.

It could be hereditary – often dark eye circles run in families, or it could be caused by sun exposure. Always wear your sunscreen! Sunglasses with UV protection when you are spending  a lot of time out doors helps too.

Unfortunately, thinning skin around your eyes as you age is most often the cause. The thin skin is somewhat transparent and shows capillaries through it, giving it a darker bluish hue.  In this case, your only help is to hide them with cosmetics and camouflage! You will want to use a concealer (not a foundation) that has a peach tint, not white or gray.  Dab onto the area, don’t rub it on or smear it.

I have had good results with Maybelline Instant Age Rewind, which also contains sunscreen to protect further.  I prefer the “lightener” instead of the “brightener”, but it depends on how dark your circles are as to which color you want to get. The applicator is what does it for me. It’s a big spongy thing that minimizes having to use my finger pads for dabbing and covers a large area.

One more thing that may help is vitamin supplements or eye creams containing Brazilian suma which have had good results for naturally reducing dark circles.

Wax on – Wax Off (How to wax!)

Waxing is a great way to remove unwanted hair from anywhere on your body, but let’s face it, the idea of ripping hair out isn’t appealing to anyone. To make waxing easier and less painful, try starting with quality products, including some type of topical numbing agent. Waxing kits come in all shapes, sizes, and styles.

Some brands to consider are Nair wax kit (it’s not like it used to be), Surgi, GiGi, and Satin Smooth. When buying a kit, it will normally come with the wax, applicators, waxing strips, a numbing agent (a spray, wipe, or lotion) and an after-wax skin soother (aloe-based products will also reduce redness). Before you wax, make sure hair is at least ¼” long but not longer than about ½”. If hair is too long, trim first. Be sure to clean the area with the pre-was cleanser provided which usually contains the numbing agent, then use a very small amount of powder to dust the area using a cotton ball or cotton swab depending on the area you are waxing. Apply the wax in the same direction that the hair is growing.

Try to keep the application even…not too thin, not too thick. Cover the waxed area with the strip and rub in even strokes in the direction the hair is growing several times. Be sure to leave a little of the strip at the end to hold onto when removing the strip. Now grab the end of the strip, gently hold the skin taught, and quickly, in one pull, remove the strip in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Avoid the urge to pull up and keep the pulling hand as close to the skin as possible. Pressing a wax free hand or finger on the newly waxed area will help to alleviate some of the pain. Tweeze any leftover hairs; DO NOT rewax the same area. Use the wax remover from the kit to get rid of any leftover wax or residue once you are done waxing and finish with a skin soother. If you run out of wax remover, baby oil will also work. When you have finished, use an aloe-based lotion or the after-wax serum in your kit to soothe skin and remove redness.

Tweezer Tips

Unwanted hair just seems to keep popping up! Whether you are trying to tame those eyebrows or eliminate some unsightly whiskers, tweezing can be a great method. The first step to successful tweezing is a quality pair of tweezers that you like. Some people prefer a slanted tip while others like a sharp point.

Some great brands to check out include Revlon, Tweezerman, and Sephora.  Once you have your trusty tool picked out, wash your face with warm water. Even take a few extra moments to relax by holding the warm washcloth to your face and taking a few deep breaths. Not only will you relax, but so will the follicles which will help to remove the hairs. If you can’t handle the pain, try using a product like Gigi’s Anesthetic Numbing Spray which is available on Amazon. Remember not to spray near your face. Put some on a cotton swab or cotton ball and then apply to the face. Gently pull the skin area to be tweezed taught, grab the hair near the base, but be careful not to pinch the skin.

Always pull hair in the direction that it grows to prevent breaking and leaving a short hair that can’t be removed. Using a magnified mirror can make seeing the hairs easier, but remember that hairs are magnified now and not everything needs to go. Pluck with discretion. No one should have to paint on eyebrows after plucking. When finished, applying an aloe-based lotion will reduce any redness. Plucking regularly, whether weekly or monthly will help to make this step in your beauty regime easier and faster.

How to Fix Broken Makeup

We’ve all seen the very frustrating problem of broken makeup, such as eyeshadow, pressed powder, or blush.  Good news. Don’t throw it away — it can be fixed! Here’s how:

Empty the broken makeup into the corner of a plastic zip bag. Make sure to get all of it out. Then crush it into a fine powder and snip the corner of the bag to pour it back into the pan. You can skip the baggie step if you can crush it all to a powder while still in the makeup container.

Next, take an eyedropper (or a syringe or a small spray bottle) of rubbing alcohol. Add a drop at a time to the broken makeup powder and stir it with a toothpick until it becomes a thick paste. Then tap the container onto the table to level it out. You can also press the paste to get a nice shape again using a coin (or other flat object) wrapped in a paper towel or cloth . The alcohol will evaporate and leave your makeup solid again.

Make the makeup and beauty products you already have last longer. A penny saved is a penny earned.  It’s practically like getting free stuff.

Rainbow Colored Braces

Need some beauty tips for beautiful braces?  (for you or that teen girl in your life!)  What color should you get your bands when you go to the orthodontist?  Here’s a great idea — ask the orthodontist technician if she could give you rainbow colored bands for your braces!

Be very specific or bring in a picture because sometimes they do not quite get it right.  One time the tech mixed up the colors and randomly applied them. This wasn’t the rainbow effect we were looking for.  So, be sure to ask that the bands be attached in the correct order of colors, and that the bottom ones match exactly. If you click the photo at the left, you’ll get a larger one that you can print and take with you.

Or bring in a list of colors in this order: Start with Red, orange,  yellow, green, blue, navy blue, and purple.  And if you need more, then maybe black and finally one more red for a bit of color at the end.  Repeat the colors to match on the bottom.  Your friends will LOVE your new rainbow design! Talk about a bright smile!

Must-Know Makeup Tricks

Some people just seem to have a knack for flawless makeup application. It doesn’t seem to matter where they are or how they apply it, the makeup always looks natural and beautiful. Then there are those of us who could spend hours and hours trying, but never get it quite right. Whether you’re a makeup whiz or a makeup ditz, try some of these foolproof methods for a successful makeup application.

*Start with a smooth and natural canvas by applying a lightweight liquid or mousse foundation, then blend it with a quality brush for a much more natural look. The brush will remove any streaks and help create a smoother finish.

*Always BLEND with a good makeup brush. Whether it is foundation, powder, blush or eye shadow, blend using small circles until you think it’s natural looking and blended. Then blend just a little bit more.

*Without a steady hand, eyeliner can get a bit dangerous. If you want to line the eyes, try using your mascara at the very, very base of the lashes and giving it a little extra wiggle with the application.

*Lips can be lined to help create a shape and look you want, but no one really wants to look like cartoon with the outline of lips. Never use a sharply sharpened liner; always dull the tip for a softer and more natural line. Fill in the outlined area lightly with the same liner, top with a lipstick or gloss, dust with face powder and then apply a second coat of lipstick or gloss for a flawless and stay-put finish.

*Never use your fingers for applying makeup. Those oily digits will break down the makeup faster, smear and smudge without warning, and leave streaks that will take longer to blend. There are a myriad of choices for inexpensive brushes and utensils out there that will make a big difference in your look.

Beauty Masks 101

Taking care of your face is the most essential part of any beauty regimen. Washing and moisturizing twice a day is a must no matter what makeup you wear, if any, but sometimes our faces need a little extra tender loving care. A great and inexpensive way to do that is with a mask.

Masks come in a wide variety of styles, ingredients, and benefits. Whether you prefer a peel-off or a wash-off mask, there are fantastic choices out there. A good place to start your sampling of masks is with the Montagne Jeunesse line of packets. Each packet has one or two applications, depending on the style, and is a convenient way to try and find out what works best for you. This line of masks can be found in the health and beauty section of any major grocery or drug store.

Almost all of the varieties promote an “anti-stress” quality, but let’s face it, if you apply the mask and actually sit back and are still for the ten to fifteen minutes of processing time, that’s a stress relief in and of itself. Some of the more popular styles are the chocolate mud mask, which will deep clean your pores; the mint mask, which will clean and tighten skin; and the clean-up mud, which will deep clean and reduce the appearance of pores. No matter the style you choose, take fifteen minutes every week to pamper yourself and your skin…you deserve it!

Lazy-Day Hair Fixes

None of us feel like putting in the effort to look our best every day, but we also know that if we run errands with no make-up and that messy top-not of hair, we will run into every old boyfriend, neighbor, PTA member, coworker and family friend possible. In order to avoid those diverted eyes, try an easy hair fix that makes you look like you took some time before leaving the house…even though you didn’t.

  • Braid it! We learned how to braid when we were kids, but don’t think to do it often any more. Add a deep side part and braid the front hair along the hairline. Use a bobby pin to secure the braid behind your ear or sweep it back into a bun. Want to keep the bangs out and free? Create one large braid with all of your hair and twist it into a low bun. It takes five minutes, but is a classic look. Use a couple bobby pins to tame those wild pieces popping out for a cleaner look.
  • Run the blow-dryer through the hair for just a couple minutes and then run your favorite shine product through just the ends. The roots will dry as you drive, and you’ll look like you took the time to actually dry and style.

You are no longer a teenage cheerleader, so stop putting the ponytail on the top of your head! We all love the convenience of throwing our hair into a ponytail, but enough is enough. Pick up so interesting and fun large clips to use to pull your hair back at the base of your neck…it’s a ponytail in disguise! Or use clear or natural color ponytail holders to pull your hair back low and to the side.

How to do Tuxedo Nails

Here is how to paint little tuxedos on your nails. These adorable tuxedo nails were painted by a 13 year old girl on herself. She did a great job!  It’s easy and your friends will love it.

Start with clean nails as usual by removing all old polish. File down any rough spots and smooth your nails to a length that works for you.  Start with a clear undercoat to protect your  nails from discoloring. Next, apply a nice neat layer of white nail polish. Use at least two coats.  When that is good and dry, use a small brush to add the black polish to your “tuxedo” nail tips.

In this photo, our model did the tips much like you would do french tips, only instead of white, they are black. You may choose to paint more of a V shape to look like a tuxedo jacket on your nails instead of this rounded look.  Finally, use a dotting tool to add the buttons and the bow.  Don’t forget a top coat of  clear polish to make them last!  Your nails have never looked cuter!
